Gone with the Wind

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

The Film's poster with the Gable and Leigh
The Film “Gone with the Wind” is a Hollywood classic. It is a classic because it stands the test of time. This film has everything from war and action, to love and romance. It is what can be described as an epic film, because of everything that it has. The film came out in 1939 and almost swept the Oscars that year, and one can see why. The film also stands the tests of time because, even though it tells the story of a young spoiled southern woman who must persevere through her life during and after the Civil War, it shows the human condition and how one will always do what is needed to survive. “Gone with the Wind” is a sweeping epic film and will always be appreciated because of its greatness.

2)  Find a related article and summarize the content.

Some of the great costuming in the film
This article talks about the reasons why “Gone with the Wind” is still awesome. The first reasons the article talks about how beautiful the costuming was. The costumes were made specially to be shot in Technicolor. Then there was the sheer amount of the costumes that had to be made for the extras let alone the cast.  Another reason the article talks about is the casting of the film. It took forever to find the right Scarlett O’Hara, filming had even started before they found Vivien Leigh. The people were not happy at first with the casting of Leigh, but after they saw her performance they were more than pleased. The public had demanded that Clark Gable be cast as Rhett Butler, so he was given the role. The last reason that the article talks about is its lasting impact on popular culture. The film stands the test of time from the sweeping score, to the iconic lines. “Gone with the Wind” stands the test of time and will always hold a place in film history just because of how awesome and wonderful the film is.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class

Leigh's beautiful expressive face
The film is a sweeping epic. One of the points in the article is about Vivien Leigh’s performance and how iconic it is, because it is iconic. Leigh won the Oscar for her role as Scarlett O’Hara. The role of Scarlett is a hard one to play because the character is hard to like and root for. Leigh did a great job of making the audiences want to root for Scarlett some of the time and then at other times almost hate Scarlett and root against her. It was a hard role to play and Leigh did a fantastic job and made the role stand the test of time.  The article states that Leigh’s expressive face is what makes us fall for the character, and that is very true. The audience can see at every turn what Scarlett is feeling and what she is planning on doing next to save herself or Tara. Another point form the article is how great Victor Fleming’s direction was. The film had gone through several directors before Fleming was asked to do the job. One can see that Fleming sense of direction for the film was right. He led them to eight Oscars and down the road into film history. Fleming did a great job with directing this film and one can see just by watching this film as a casual movie goer, they do not have to be looking into the depths of film analysis to see that Fleming knew what he was doing.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film

The love story of Scarlett and Rhett
The film “Gone with the Wind” is a classic, no one can argue that. It holds a place in American and world film History based on just ticket sales and box office gross alone. The film is also special to American history because it tells the story of the American Civil War through the eyes of a civilian. Too many times wars are told through the eyes of soldier, which is important, but to see war through the eyes of a woman forced to survive on the home front and even escape marching armies is incredible story telling. The film shows how the South was ready and willing to go to war, but when the war comes down to a war of attrition they don’t have the manpower, machinery or supplies to keep things going. The story is of Scarlett O’Hara and the South, and how they both changed because of this war. Their stories are synonymous because both fight to survive and keep their old ways, but eventually have to change and come to a new way of thinking. I feel that this film does a great job of telling Scarlett’s story and how she over comes every obstacle thrown at her, but in the end does not get what she wants but resolves to find a way to and do anything to get it. This film is a classic and will always be because it tells the story of the human condition and how people will do anything to survive, and I fell that is a universal theme for most movies, and people are still trying to replicate that in film today.

Stage Coach

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
Poster for the film
The film screened in class was Stagecoach, directed by John Ford. The film was the breakout film role for John Wayne and westerns. Both Wayne and westers who previously only been of “b-movie” genre of filmmaking.  This film made John Wayne a Hollywood star and actor. This film was made by the famous director John Ford. Ford fought to have

Wayne as his leading man, he knew he had it in him to be a leading man, and he was right. Without this film, westerns would never have gotten the reputation that they deserved. This film goes down in film history because of the significance its director, and how it brought forth westerns and the career of John Wayne.

2)  Find a related article and summarize the content.

The article that I found in relation to the film Stagecoach is from the LA Times. It talks about how influential this movie was to the career of both John Wayne and the director John Ford. The article talks about how the film is being re-released on a two disk Blu-ray from the Criterion Collection. The article then goes to talk about how this film shaped the western drama, with Ford’s use of the vast landscapes and character development.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class
John Wayne as Ringo Kidd
This article applies to the film because it shows how deep Ford thought about everything that went into making this movie. Ford fought hard to have Wayne as his leading man, because he saw something in him and knew he was going to be a star. The article talks about how Ford was the first to use the vast landscape of Utah for his film. The film has all different levels of people in society that are in this stagecoach. For liked to use different character to show how people can be and how they can change.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film
Dallas taking care of the sick Mrs. Mallory
This film has a ragtag group of people jammed together going on a journey. They all go on a physical journey, but some go on an emotional one. The characters change because of the others around them and the situations that occur over the course of the film. This can be considered one of the first road trip films. This film uses the physical journey as a metaphor for some of the character to change themselves for the better. Ford uses this as a device to show that not all journeys are physical ones from place to place. This is something that Ford does in a lot of his films. This films does a great job of showing how one can judge someone on first appearances, like Dallas who was a prostitute. But when one gets to know them as a person, they can see that they are not that appears to be. Dallas may have been a prostitute, but she was a good person. She was a whore with a heart of gold. She truly cared for people, who never would have given her a second glance had they not been on this adventure together. This film does a great job of showing how a journey can be both a physical one and an emotional one. Ford uses the landscape of the west to do this, and he did it beautifully.

It Happened One Night

The poster from the film
1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
The film It Happened One Night is one of the very first screwball comedies that Hollywood produced. The film starts Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. The film relates to what we talked about in class because they took the sexual situations that were in the silent films and changed it to witty dialogue that happened between the two characters. This film does have sexual tension between the two characters, which is why the film almost did not get the seal of approval to be shown to the mass audiences because of the sexual tension and attraction between the two characters. This film turned all of the very graphic stations that were in the silent film era and changed the sexual tension to be felt verbally rather than seen. They used sound and dialogue instead of sexual scenarios.

2)  Find a related article and summarize the content.
The article that I found in relation to the film It Happened One Night has to deal with the films leading lady, Claudette Colbert. The article talks about the actress life when she was younger and how she moved to New York from Paris at a young age. The article then goes to talk about how Colbert was a stage actress before she was a hit on the big screen. The article then goes to talk about how Colbert has worked with some of the greatest directors to ever work in Hollywood. It also states how Colbert won the Oscar for her role of Ellie in It Happened One Night.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class
Colbert and Gable in the iconic hitch =hiking scene
The article relates to the film screened in class by stating how well praised Colbert was for her work on the film. Colbert won the Academy Award for her portrayal of Ellie Andrews. The film also won the other four major awards that year, including best film, actor for Clark Gable, best director and writing. The film was a huge critical success. Colbert and Gable will be one of the big screens greatest on screen couples, forever remembered for their performances in this film. Colbert was a great actress and this film shows the great work that she was able to do on screen.

In this scene the two characters having a witty conversation instead of sex
4) Write a critical analysis of the film
The Film It Happened One Night is one of Hollywood’s first screwball comedies. This film was made after the transition from silent films to “talkies”. This is one of the first films to use dialogue to convey sexual tension, instead of what was used in the silent film era. The silent film era had much nudity and sexual senarios that the characters were involved in, and with the Hays Commission of 22 and the Catholic League of Decency in 34 those days had come to an end. Those films were banned, and what came out of it was the screwball comedy. These films were made because of a strict ban on the sexual scenarios of the silent film era. The films could also use dialogue to replace those situations. This film holds a place in film history because it was one of the first screwball comedies that made its way from the transition of silent films to sound. Without the transition from silent film to sound and the pressure from outside sources to clean up the movies, this film would not exist. This film is very enjoyable and one can see why it is a classic. Like so many films after it, one roots for the couple to fall in love and live happily ever after. This film is a great one and holds an important place in fil history because of the time period it was made and how it helped transition Hollywood into what we know as the screwball comedies.
