1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the
screening.
Poster for the film |
The film screened in class was Stagecoach, directed by John Ford. The film was the breakout film
role for John Wayne and westerns. Both Wayne and westers who previously only
been of “b-movie” genre of filmmaking. This
film made John Wayne a Hollywood star and actor. This film was made by the
famous director John Ford. Ford fought to have
Wayne as his leading man, he knew he had it in him to be a leading man, and he was right. Without this film, westerns would never have gotten the reputation that they deserved. This film goes down in film history because of the significance its director, and how it brought forth westerns and the career of John Wayne.
2) Find a related article and summarize the content.
The article that I found in relation to the film Stagecoach is from the LA Times. It
talks about how influential this movie was to the career of both John Wayne and
the director John Ford. The article talks about how the film is being
re-released on a two disk Blu-ray from the Criterion Collection. The article
then goes to talk about how this film shaped the western drama, with Ford’s use
of the vast landscapes and character development.
3) Apply the article to the film screened in class
John Wayne as Ringo Kidd |
This article applies to the film because it shows how deep
Ford thought about everything that went into making this movie. Ford fought
hard to have Wayne as his leading man, because he saw something in him and knew
he was going to be a star. The article talks about how Ford was the first to
use the vast landscape of Utah for his film. The film has all different levels
of people in society that are in this stagecoach. For liked to use different character
to show how people can be and how they can change.
4) Write a critical analysis of the film
Dallas taking care of the sick Mrs. Mallory |
This film has a ragtag group of people jammed together
going on a journey. They all go on a physical journey, but some go on an
emotional one. The characters change because of the others around them and the
situations that occur over the course of the film. This can be considered one
of the first road trip films. This film uses the physical journey as a metaphor
for some of the character to change themselves for the better. Ford uses this
as a device to show that not all journeys are physical ones from place to
place. This is something that Ford does in a lot of his films. This films does
a great job of showing how one can judge someone on first appearances, like
Dallas who was a prostitute. But when one gets to know them as a person, they
can see that they are not that appears to be. Dallas may have been a prostitute,
but she was a good person. She was a whore with a heart of gold. She truly
cared for people, who never would have given her a second glance had they not
been on this adventure together. This film does a great job of showing how a
journey can be both a physical one and an emotional one. Ford uses the
landscape of the west to do this, and he did it beautifully.
